Clinical Practice

I am an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. I graduated with Distinction from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, University of London, in 2007 and commenced practice in anaesthesia in 2010. I was appointed a consultant in 2018. My clinical interests are nerve blocks, spinal and epidural anaesthesia, trauma and airway management, resuscitation, perioperative medicine and risk assessment.

Scope of Practice

I am an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. I graduated with Distinction from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2007 and commenced practice in anaesthesia in 2010. I undertook postgraduate training in anaesthesia in London and Brighton before moving to Nottingham. I was awarded the MacIntosh Medal from the Royal College of Anaesthetists when I obtained Fellowship of the College in 2013.

I administer around 300 general anaesthetics and 200 regional anaesthetics (i.e. epidurals, spinals and nerve blocks) annually. I undertake NHS clinical sessions in elective, emergency and trauma anaesthesia. I have experience of all anaesthesia-related subspecialties however I no longer practice in chronic pain, intensive care medicine, cardiac, neonatal or obstetric anaesthesia. I am an FRCA Examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Associate Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia Education and an Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia.

Registration and indemnification

I am registered with a license to practice on the General Medical Council Specialist Register (GMC Reference 6159558). I am a GMC-recognised trainer. I am a member of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS Reference M241150).

Dr David Hewson

David Hewson is an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. Alongside his active clinical and research practice he provides medicolegal reports as an expert witness in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.
